Democratic Republic of Congo has qualified alongside Nigeria for the Semifinal after defeating Guinea 3-1 to advance to the next stage.
Guinea struck first in the 20th minute after DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba fouled Mohammed Bayo in the Box-18 area who converted from the penalty spot. DR Congo responded 7 minutes later to level the score at 1-1 after a fine shot from Chancel Mbemba.
DR Congo who had drawn all their matches in all four of their previous games played in Ivory Coast was awarded a penalty in the 65th minute after Julian Jeanvier clipped the legs of Silas Katumpa. Brentford striker, Yoanne Wissa stepped up to convert the penalty to give his team a 2-1 lead.
Arthur Masuaku extended the lead for the Leopards, scoring a sublime free kick from the edge of the penalty box in the 82nd minute, ensuring they qualified for the semi-final. Sebastien Desabre’s side hopes to do better than their last semifinal outing in 2015 where they finished third. They will face the winner of the other quarter-final match between the Host Nation, Ivory Coast and Mali on Wednesday, February 7th 2024.
