The Super Eagles of Nigeria faced a challenging 1-1 draw against the Elephants of Equatorial Guinea in their inaugural AFCON match hosted in Ivory Coast on Sunday.
Entering the game with confidence, Nigeria, led by African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen, showed resilience despite key injuries to Victor Boniface, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Sadiq Umar.
The team initiated the match energetically, with Osimhen narrowly missing a goal in the 4th minute after an error from Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper.

In a surprising move, Stanley Nwabali was chosen over Francis Uzoho as the goalkeeper, a decision made in response to recent criticism of Uzoho’s performance.
Despite this change, the Elephants managed to maintain their defensive discipline, and Iban Salvador capitalised on a chance in the 37th minute, delivering a brilliant finish to put Equatorial Guinea in the lead.
The Super Eagles swiftly responded, equalising the score in the same half after Alex Iwobi’s cross found Osimhen. Moses Simon attempted to break the tie with a near-post shot in added time, but Owono, Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper, held firm.
The second half mirrored the intensity of the first, with Nigeria creating opportunities that were thwarted by Owono’s remarkable saves. In the 67th minute, Alhassan Yusuf, who was making a bright debut in midfield, unfortunately had to be carried off on a stretcher due to an injury.
Manager Jose Peserio made strategic substitutions, bringing on Joe Aribo and Samuel Chukwueze for Yusuf and Simon, aiming to inject more aggression into Nigeria’s attack.
Despite limited chances for both teams, Osimhen squandered a golden opportunity in the 76th minute, missing a right-footed shot wide of the near post.
Equatorial Guinea’s steadfast defence secured a crucial draw against the 2013 champions, emphasising their determination and resilience throughout the match.
