The Algerian Football Federation has hired Vladimir Petkovic as the Head Coach of the team ahead of the 2026 World Cup Qualifying matches.
Petkovic who was in charge of the Switzerland National Team when they eliminated the 2018 World Cup Champions, France at the Euro 2020 Championship was hired to coach the North African Team through the qualifying campaign of the 2026 World Cup. Vladimir Petkovic will arrive in Algiers this weekend. A news conference is scheduled for Monday.

The announcement was made official in a statement via X on Thursday Afternoon by the Algeria Football Federation. The statement reads “The Algerian Football Federation reaches a final agreement with Bosnian coach, Vladimir Petkovic to supervise the senior national football team. The new national voter will arrive in Algeria next Sunday and will hold a press conference on Monday. The FAF announces the finalization of the contract design of the new national selection network.

Petkovic’s seven-year spell with Switzerland ended after losing to Spain on Penalty shootout in the Euro 2020 quarterfinals. The famous win against France was a 3-3 draw before winning on penalties. He left Switzerland to coach French club , Bordeaux but was sacked during his first season in February 2022. The 60-year-old will now replace 2021 AFCON Winning Coach, Djamel Belmadi who resigned in January after Algeria failed to qualify from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage in Ivory Coast.
