Tragedy struck during a gathering of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, students at a nightclub in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, on Monday night, resulting in one death and several injuries.
The incident unfolded due to a misunderstanding that sparked a violent altercation between two student groups at a popular venue in the town.
The students had congregated at the club to celebrate the university’s convocation ceremony when tensions flared and conflict erupted.
As the situation escalated, the club owner called the police to intervene. Regrettably, one student was reported dead, and others were injured in the ensuing melee, according to witnesses present.
Details surrounding the fatal incident remain unclear, with the deceased’s body now held at the Ogbomosho Police Area Command.
Authorities from both the police and LAUTECH have yet to issue official statements on the matter at this time.
Meanwhile, the Oyo State chapter of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) Campus Monitoring Committee (CMC), has declared a shutdown of academic activities at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, over the killing of a student of the institution by a policeman.
The union vehemently in a statement issued by its Executive Chairman, Comrade Michael Oladipupo, on Tuesday condemned vehemently what it described as “the appalling and senseless murder of one of our esteemed students at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso at the hands of members of the Nigerian Police Force.”
