Athletics starts today at the African as the likes of Nigerian entries: Olajide Olayinka, Justina Eyakpobeyan, Blessing Ogundiran, Usheoritse Itsekiri, Consider Ekanem Sunday and Israel Okon are set to compete in the 100 and 200 meters respectively.
The Morning session events include the Men’s 100m Decathlon, Women’s 100m heat, Men’s 100m heat, Men’s Long Jump Decathlon heats. In the first heat, Nigeria’s Athletes, Itsekiri has been drawn to go against World Indoor Finalist, Emmanuel Eseme. The fifth heat has Sunday Israel Okon facing Ghana’s fastest man, Benjamin Azamati while Consider Ekanem will clash with Arthur Cisse in Heat 6.
The Nigerian trio of Justina Eyakpobeyan, Olajide Olayinka and Blessing Ogundiran will take to track in the women’s 100m heats as Justina will face off with Botswana, Tsaone Bakani Sebele, Ghanaian, Mary Boakye and six other athletes.
Team Nigeria have moved up one place on the medal table after winning two gold medals to reclaim their second spot at the ongoing African Games in Ghana.
The Nigerian Team had dropped to Third on Thursday with South Africa claiming the second spot. Nigeria ended Day 10 of the event in third position with 76 medals (27 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze) to overtake the South Africans who occupied third place with 25 gold, 29 silver and 38 bronze medals. Though Nigeria sit above South Africa on the medal table having claimed more gold medals, they have fewer total medals won compared to the South Africans who have won 92 medals.
North Africa Country, Egypt leads the Medal Table with 154 medals, which comprises of 90 gold, 35 silver and 29 bronze medals. Meanwhile, hosts, Ghana, continue to climb up the medal table after picking up their ninth gold of the event to move from eighth position to six on the log to displace Mauritius who now occupy the seventh spot.
