Kenya’s Athlete, Bernard Sang has emerged as the winner of the 2024 Access Bank Marathon held on Saturday, February 10th in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Kenyan crossed the finish line after clocking a time of 02:16:49 (2 hours, 16 minutes and forty-nine seconds). The second and third place for the 40km race were also won by his Kenya’s compatriots, Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo. The 32-year-old will be going home with a cash prize of 50,000 dollars while the second and third place will win 40,000 dollars and 30,000 dollars respectively.
Bernard Sang joins the list of Kenya’s past winners who have won the Access Bank Marathon previously in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021. The winners of the men’s and women’s races have automatically qualified for the marathon event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris later in the year.
The first Nigerian to reach the finish line was Shehu Muazu who will be going home with One Million Naira Cash Prize. In the Female Category, 25-year-old Ethiopia’s Kebene Chala was the first woman to cross the finish line.
