The Academy team of Nigeria-based club, Sporting Lagos emerged victorious in the Gothia Cup, defeating FC Tokyo 4-0 in the final at Gamla Ullevi Stadium in Sweeden on Saturday.
The team competing in the international Gothia Cup for the first time since its inception in 1975 showcased exceptional talent throughout the tournament. Remarkably, they had not conceded a goal until the semi-final against Beyond Limits Academy of Ogun State which they eventually won 5-4.
In the final on Saturday, Sporting Lagos Academy dominated Japan-based FC Tokyo, securing a convincing 4-0 win to claim the prestigious trophy.
They started the match strongest breaking the deadlock in the ninth minute through Yusuf Abdullahi who slotted in a shot beyond the reach of the Japanese goalkeeper.
Ten minutes later, the Nigerians extended their lead. Babatunde Akomolede launched a rocket from outside the penalty area that soared into the top right corner of the net as they led two nil going to the half time break. In the second half, Sporting Lagos continued to be creative in attack and solid in defense. In the 55th minute, they sealed the game when Lucky John pounced and tapped in a rebound. Sporting Lagos extended their lead once more, and the final score was set at 4-0.
The win meant that they are confirmed the new champions of the B17E category. The Most Valuable Player, Babatunde Akomolede speaking to the media about his goal said ” I just tried to use the opportunity I had, and it turned out I used it well. The team’s performance was excellent, just perfect, I don’t know how to describe the joy I am feeling right now. I don’t know what to say, it is just too much.”
