The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, B-Zone, MSSN, has expressed a major concern over the Sokoto State House of Assembly’s reported plans to pass a bill that could diminish the authority of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III.
In a statement, the Society urged caution, highlighting the profound religious, cultural, and historical significance of the Sultanate.
“The office of the Sultan of Sokoto is not merely a regional position but a revered institution for Muslims across Nigeria,” the statement read.
“Any attempt to undermine this office is perceived as an assault on the entire Muslim community of Nigeria,” it added.
As the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims and chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), the Sultan has been a pivotal figure promoting unity, peace, and moral guidance.
The Society warned that destabilising his position could threaten the harmony among Nigerian Muslims and the broader community.
The Muslim Students Society called on the Sokoto State Government to reconsider any actions that might jeopardise the Sultanate’s sanctity and respect.
They also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene, emphasising the federal government’s responsibility to protect vital religious and cultural institutions from political interference.
“We stand resolutely with His Eminence, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III,” the statement continued. “We will not be silent on any attempt to denigrate or destabilise this esteemed office.”
The Society concluded by urging all stakeholders to prioritise the greater good of the Nigerian Muslim community and the nation, warning that the repercussions of undermining the Sultanate could be far-reaching and detrimental to national peace and cohesion
