After a three-year tenure, officials confirmed on Friday, that Paulo Duarte has resigned as coach of Togo.
His departure comes as the team struggles in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. “The Executive Committee regrets this decision but takes note of it and wishes to express its gratitude to him for his work, commitment, and professionalism during the years of collaboration,” the Togolese Football Federation stated.
While no specific reason was given for the Portuguese coach’s resignation, Duarte’s tenure saw the team fail to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Togo is fourth in their World Cup qualification group, seven points behind leaders Sudan and five points behind Senegal.
In the World Cup qualification format, only the top team in each of the nine pools advances automatically to the United States, Mexico, and Canada finals.
