South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Nocawe Mafu, has revealed that the government is steadfast in its support for Caster Semenya’s ongoing battle against World Athletics.
Semenya,a two-time Olympic champion, is fighting for her right to compete in the 800m distance without being required to lower her natural testosterone levels.
The case, currently before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), has garnered significant attention. Mafu emphasized that supporting Semenya is not just about her individual rights but about setting a precedent for the future of all athletes facing similar challenges.
While Semenya declined to comment, citing the pending court hearing, Mafu reiterated the government’s unwavering support, highlighting the involvement of various commissions and resources provided to Semenya’s legal team.
Despite her absence from the upcoming Paris Olympics, a favorable outcome for Semenya could resonate globally, making a powerful statement about fairness and inclusivity in sports.
