The Mozambican government has announced its collaboration with Moscow authorities to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of the Russian Ambassador Alexander Surikov.
Surikov, aged 68, was discovered deceased on Saturday night at his official residence in Maputo, as per local media reports. The cause of death remains undisclosed.
The Mozambican public prosecutor’s office expressed unawareness of any purported refusal by Russian authorities to conduct an autopsy on the ambassador’s body, contrary to what local media had reported.
President Filipe Nyusi conveyed in a statement that Surikov’s passing has left a profound void, describing him as a committed diplomat possessing exceptional qualities. Surikov had assumed the ambassadorial role in 2017.
