Former Nigeria International, Finidi George has been appointed as the new Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles.
Following the departure of José Santos Peseiro after securing the runner-up position at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, George stepped in as interim coach for two recent friendly matches in Morocco.
In his interim stint, George’s squad secured a historic 2-1 victory over Ghana, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars. However, they suffered a setback with a 0-2 loss to Mali in the subsequent game. With a wealth of experience as a player, including 62 caps for Nigeria and notable achievements in international tournaments, George brings a formidable pedigree to his new role.
As a key member of the ‘Golden Generation’ that triumphed at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and made waves at the FIFA World Cup in the same year, George is no stranger to success on the international stage. His immediate focus will be on guiding the Super Eagles to victory in crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic. These upcoming fixtures are vital for Nigeria, currently trailing behind in Group C of the African campaign.
With George at the helm, Nigerian football enthusiasts are hopeful for a resurgence in the Super Eagles’ performance as they aim to secure their place on the global stage once again.
