The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) strongly denounced the killing of one of its personnel, Charles Kiir Gone, who was serving in the peacekeeping mission in Wau.
Mr. Gone was tragically attacked and killed by armed individuals at a relative’s residence while on leave.
The incident, believed to be tied to cattle rustling, was reported by Eye Radio news.
Expressing condolences to the family, UNMISS called upon authorities to promptly investigate the attack.
Nicholas Haysom, the head of UNMISS, emphasized in a statement that this incident highlights the persistent and genuine threat faced by UN peacekeepers in their support for South Sudan’s pursuit of peace.
The region has been grappling with a relentless cycle of cattle raids and retaliatory assaults, resulting in a significant loss of lives in recent years.
