African Cup of Nations Host, Cote d’Ivoire defeated the Defending Champions, Senegal 5-4 on penalties after
a 1-1 draw at Full-time in their Round of 16 match on Monday night.
The Defending Champions took the lead in the 4th minute through Habib Diallo from a Sadio Mane cross. The Al-Shabaab
forward who comfortably controlled the ball to his chest and then shot into the roof of the goalpost to give Senegal the lead.
Cote d’Ivoire continued to search for an equalizer until the 86th minute when Franck Kessie converted a spot kick to level the match after 90 minutes.
The match headed to extra time to decide who will triumph to the Quarter Finals. Both teams tried to
look for the winner through Sadio Mane and Simon Adingra’s efforts both missing the target until the match headed into penalties.
Kessie who scored the equalizer was called into action again as he scored the winning penalty kick
for the Ivorians after Moussa Niakhate hit the crossbar.
Senegal’s failure to qualify for the quarter-finals means that no defending champions have made it through to the quarter-final since Egypt won a third consecutive title in 2010.
The Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire will play the winner between Mali and Burkina Faso on Saturday, February 3rd 2024.
