Former Super Eagles Coach, Finidi George has been announced as the new Technical Manager of Nigeria Premier Football League side, Rivers United.
On Wednesday, Rivers United announced Finidi as their new Technical Manager, with an official unveiling scheduled for Thursday at the Sharks stadium. The club stated that “Rivers United Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Finidi George as our new Technical Manager,”.
Finidi, a seasoned professional, boasts a distinguished playing career spanning over fifteen years. He has won the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023. The club’s statement added, “As a coach, Finidi has demonstrated his ability to lead teams to success, and we are confident that he will bring his expertise and passion to our club. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to a successful tenure under his leadership.”
Finidi resigned from his role as Super Eagles head coach in June after two matches, following disappointing performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic. This led the Nigeria Football Federation to seek a foreign technical adviser for the team. Before his stint with the Super Eagles, Finidi spent two full seasons and nearly completed a third with Enyimba, guiding them to their record-ninth NPFL title in 2023.
Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, General Manager of Rivers United FC, welcomed Finidi George, stating: “We are delighted to have Finidi George join our team. His appointment marks a new chapter in our club’s history, and we are committed to working together to achieve success.” Finidi George also expressed his gratitude to the club, saying: “I am honored to have this opportunity, and I thank the Sports Commissioner, the General Manager, and the supporters for their confidence in me. I am committed to working hard and making the team win.”
At Rivers United, he succeeds Evans Ogenyi, who served as head coach until the end of last season following the departure of long-serving, Stanley Eguma. A native of Port Harcourt, the 53-year-old Finidi began his career with Calabar Rovers, Iwanyanwu Nationale, and Sharks FC before embarking on a stellar European career. Sharks FC later merged with Dolphins in 2016 to form Rivers United.
